Ever hear of Sperky Bottling Co. in Monongahela Pa? Well I hadn’t either until today when I came across this Ebay auction. It looks like they marketed a brand of pop (aka “Soda” in primitive areas of the country) called Sperky back in the 1950′s and 1960′s. The brand must not have been very successful. I live in town and can’t remember this ever being served. I can’t find any mention of Sperky later than the 1960′s.
I’m guessing they were trying to make Sperky appeal to children by the use of a clown on the bottle. I wonder if they would have had better success marketing Sperky to a different demographic – the stay-at-home mom for example.
So what could we do to persuade moms to choose Sperky? First off let’s change the tag line on the bottle from “Perk up with Sperky” to “Redd up with Sperky.” Then, instead of using a clown, use a woman wearing an apron holding a mop in one hand and a Sperky in the other. And finally, change the formulation by adding 200mg of caffeine per serving and sweetening it with Cyclamate.
Sperky – the first feminine energy drink! Certainly safer than the diet pills which were so popular back then.
